FAQs

Why seek therapy?

You have certainly had many periods in life when you managed a variety of emotional challenges on your own or maybe with the support of those around you. There are times though when things become too complex or too overwhelming and, in those times, it is reassuring to know that you can get support from experienced therapists.

Everyone struggles from time to time. Researches show that 1 in 4 people will experience some kind of mental health problem at some point in their lives [i]. Mental Health difficulties are more common than most people realise, but you don’t have to suffer from a serious mental health difficulty to benefit from professional support. You might be having difficulties in your relationships; or you may be struggling to lead your life according to your values and goals or you may have got stuck in unhelpful or unhealthy patterns of behaviour.

I am a qualified Family and Systemic Psychotherapist with background in Clinical Psychology and Creative Art Therapy and have a wealth of experience in the public and private sector, working with diverse communities. To find out more about how I might be able to help you please refer to other sections of this website for more information about myself, my therapeutic approaches and the services I offer.

What should I be aware of when looking for a therapist?

There are a broad range of theoretical approaches, therapy modalities and therapeutic trainings in the mental health field. It is important to ensure that professionals have the appropriate training, experience and registration to match your needs. You can ask the therapist for evidence of their qualifications and/or check their registration on the professional association website with which they are registered.

It might be helpful to have a conversation with the professional to find out more about their ways of working and to see if it will be a good fit for you.

It is important to be aware that the label “Family Therapist” is currently not a protected title in the UK. As a result, some therapists may provide family sessions and call themselves family therapist, even though they do not have full training and experience in theories related to family therapy and the associated professional registration.

To find out more about my training, experiences and the services I offer, please refer to other sections of this website.

How would I know that is the best type of therapy for me?

Seeking professional help for the first time can be confusing as there are many factors to take into consideration. You may find it helpful to read other parts of this website or indeed research further on areas such as “what to be aware of when looking for a therapist”; what “research and evidence-based practice” are available and “professional organisations, services and resources”.

In addition to matching your needs and style of the therapy of your preference to the professional’s skills, qualifications and experiences, it is important to consider how you feel about working with this professional, since the progress of the work, to some extent, will depend on the therapeutic relationship you form with the therapist.

For more information about my qualifications, experiences, my therapeutic approaches and the services that I offer please visit the related sections of this website. An initial conversation will help to consider how we can work together and if it would be a good fit for you. I offer a 30 minute initial consultation with no charge.

What are the sessions like and what are your fees?

Therapy can be with individuals or with different compositions of family members or significant others. The direction and style of the sessions are co-constructed in collaboration with those in therapy.

The sessions can vary in duration, frequency and location according to the needs and preferences of all those involved in the consultations.

Sessions can be:

  • In-person or online video-conferencing sessions.
  • 55 minutes each or longer.
  • Single consultation or on-going therapy.
  • Weekly to monthly intervals but sometimes they can be further apart.
  • Short-term or open-ended.

Fees depend on the type of therapy, the location, the duration and day of the session. The page on this website on Rates details information about my fees and cancelation policy.

This website provides more information about myself, my therapeutic approaches, the type of services I offer, what to expect, testimonials from my clients and many other questions you may have.

What about privacy and confidentiality?

All details discussed in sessions are private and confidential. If the work involves a combination of individual and family sessions, it will be discussed and agreed with those involved what will be / will not be shared with others.

It is necessary to ensure everyone’s safety. As such, where there are concerns of risk to the person in therapy or others, it might be necessary to discuss the concerns with others e.g. family members or your GP. Upon booking the first session, you will receive a document with more information on this.

Protocols of confidentiality and procedures regarding risks are part of the code of professional ethics. I adhere to the UKCP - UK Council for Psychotherapy and  he Association for Family Therapy and Systemic Practice in the UK. Visit my page Code of Ethics and Practice for more information.
